U.S. Sourced Post-consumer Plastic % Acquired by North American Reclaimers in 2022

The U.S., Canada, and Mexico, as distinct from material exported overseas, are the main North American destinations for U.S. sourced recycled plastic and are referred to as North America in this study.
Survey responders provided comments such as "demand and supply are down". Some expressed a price crunch in that bale prices were high while demand for PCR low. Despite such headwinds some reclaimers have made or are making plans for new investments and expansions in processing. Reclaimers throughout North America, including U.S. reclaimers, acquired a total of 4,700.1 million pounds, or 93.7 percent of the plastic recovered for recycling in the U.S., up 2.7 million pounds. 13 U.S. reclaimers acquired the majority at 4,307.8 million pounds or 85.9 percent, up 21.4 million pounds. The remaining 317.1 million pounds, or 6.3 percent of plastic recovered for recycling in the U.S., were exported overseas with a decline of 73.9 million pounds.
13. The survey gathers data and includes material acquired by reclaimers, which are defined as companies that wash post-consumer material or otherwise process unwashed material into a clean feedstock or end product.
